Voter? Got Info? Elections, One Week To Go!

In about one week, municipalities throughout St Charles County will be electing aldermen, voting on tax bills, and watching politicians nash teeth. That includes Wentzville!!

How better to nervous-up a few more politicians than to ask voters for any and everything they think they know about their elected officials - or just ask some questions.

If you suggest something (or know something) good we might send it out with our print edition this coming week. We already have an extremely interesting Lead Headline in mind, but are looking for others.

As we have gotten closer to April 8th (Election Day), each of our newly posted stories is quickly getting upwards of a 1000 unique views. So, your comments will be seen by the New Wentzvillian and YOUR NEIGHBORS.

Michael E. Carter, Longtime Opponent of Red Light Cameras Announces Run For St. Charles County Council -- Top Priority Is County-Wide Ban of Traffic Cameras.

For Immediate Release

St. Charles, MO, March 25, 2014--Today, Michael E. Carter, owner of Carter Law Offices, LLC and long-time opponent of red light cameras has announced that he will run for St. Charles County Council's Third District seat.

Carter has a long history of vehemently fighting the use of red light cameras and speed cameras in Missouri. During Carter's term as Judge in Wentzville, he set into motion the complete ban of red light cameras in that city.

Wentzville Mayor Nicholas Guccione says that "Mike Carter knew the red-light cameras were illegal even before our city attorneys and he had a clear understanding that traffic cameras are about revenue and not safety."

Carter claims to have had hundreds of red light camera tickets dismissed aroun

d the St. Louis metro area as an attorney representing people accused of these violations.

On March 13, 2014, Carter testified at a Missouri House Committee meeting in favor of HB1976 to ban the use of red light cameras in the state, and more recently, Carter spoke at a town hall forum in St. Peters supporting a ban.

Carter announced today that if he is elected to the County Council, a county-wide ban of the cameras would be at the top of his agenda. Jefferson County enacted a similar ban in 2011, but Carter hopes to enlarge on that. "Jefferson County's ban applies only to unincorporated areas. My hope would be to find a way to perpetuate a ban that would encompass all areas of St. Charles County."  Carter says this hope is based upon a state statute that allows county ordinances to apply to incorporated areas when those ordinances address public health and safety concerns.

Wentzville Aldermanic Tension -- Home Builders vs. Home Owners

The New Wentzvillian accepts letters to the editor at any time and publishes only those that provide a verified author.

OPINION LETTER SUMMARY POINTS
  • Aldermen Gossett, Gard and Stokes . . . vote to protect the builder
  • Mayor Guccione, Aldermen Kross and Hayes . . .assisted [homeowners] to come to a favorable compromise with the builder

DEAR NEW WENTZVILLIAN:

would like to challenge residents of the City of Wentzville who are concerned with home values to spend a few minutes discovering how important the choice of who is about to be elected to the Board of Alderman can affect you and your families personally.

I admit that I never got involved in local politics and didn’t feel that it made much difference until one day Alderman NickGuccione knocked on my door while in his mayoral race.

He explained to me how there were over 2500 undeveloped lots in subdivisions all across the City of Wentzville and the hardships that residents were withstanding as the housing market had taken its very ugly downturn and now was slowly trying torecover.  He told me how builders were coming into these properties and buying these lots for reduced values and then building homes of lesser value than was originally planned.

Mayor Guccione explained to me how the election for the Mayor and the Board of Alderman was very important because there were special interest groups that favored the builders and bankers that controlled what was left. What is worse is that these special interest groups contribute to the elections of Aldermen and these elected Aldermen typically vote favorably for these special interest groups.

Mayor Guccione wanted to change this and believes that it is his job to be the voice of the people so that that voice does not get lost.

My personal exposure to the Board of Alderman came when my subdivision was bought out by a large builder that also wanted to make some changes. Many of my neighbors and I went in front of the Board of Aldermen to challenge some of these changes.  It became very clear that what I was told was true.

Mayor Nick Guccione, Alderman Cheryl Kross and Alderman Mike Hayes (Neither alderman worked for my ward) were clearly open to our concerns and assisted us to come to a favorable compromise with the builder.  If not for these three and their dedication I do not believe that compromise would have been made. We believe that the compromise that was made will help us to uphold our property values now and in the future.

Our neighborhood has went in front of this board on several occasions and in my exposure to Alderman Stokes, Alderman Gossett and Alderman Gard it was clear that they vote to protect the builder in direct opposition to the residents' concerns. Not only in our situation but I have watched Alderman Stokes, Alderman Gossett and Alderman Gard consistently split the board vote in what looks to be in favor of the builders, commercial realtors, residential realtors and bankers interest.

The Builder’s proposals brought in front of the board are often lowering the standard of homes throughout the city of Wentzville. There has been talk that the special interest groups representing the builders want to change the standard of the streets building them cheaper with less rock.

This issue is crucial to all of us in Wentzville because the street life would be half of what it is now and the builders will be long gone. If we allow this it will be us the taxpayers that will have to pay to repair our city streets.  If we choose wisely now we can use that revenue to raise our own families or our city but it will be our choice not these alderman.

This kind of philosophy affects our home values across the cityThink of the future when the builders are gone; what the face of Wentzville will be and what burdens and expense the City and its taxpayers will be left with.

So my challenge to you is spend a little time researching what I am reporting to you here. You can watch the Board of Aldermen Meetings online. You can contact the Mayor by email on the city web site. He is willing to be there for anyone who has any questions or concerns.

I ask you -- for all of us that live in Wentzville -- to please consider supporting Aldermen who want to work for you and will work with the other members of the board that I know are working for you, Alderman Kross and Alderman Hayes. Please do not re-elect the Aldermen who will not stand for the people that elect them. Please consider electing Linda Wright in the election against Alderman Rick Stokes and Robert Hussey in the election against Alderman Forrest Gossett on Tuesday, April 8th, 2014.

I now know that Local City Elections really affect my personal livelihood possibly even more so than National Elections. I think most people don’t vote because they don’t know much about it. That is what motivated me to write this challenge.

I know now it is important to stand up to what is wrong in government and you can right here. Right here in your own city.  Iwe do elect a board for the people than if you need to go before the Board of Alderman about something that is important in your life or neighborhood you will have a place to turn. You do have the power to make that happen. You can VOTE. Please VOTE!

Most of all I appreciate the time you took to read and consider this, Linda Stevenson

Hope Enjoyed 1976 Spring Break

For Immediate Release
Jeff City, Missouri -- March 21, 1976?

Well, no. That's not even a picture of any roadway in Missouri. However, much like Missouri's House Bill 1976 would guarantee for Missourians, there are no red-light or speed-ticket cameras monitoring the cars in the picture above.

I hope every single Missouri legislator is having the spring break of her or his political career. I hope that each and every one of you enjoyed what may be YOUR LAST 1976 era traffic-ticket-camera-free spring break.

Why's that? Because right now, one appellate lawyer -- Ryan Keane -- has brought nearly every single red-light and speeding-ticket camera to a halt across all of Missouri. That's the first time since circa 2005. Don't you just love the word "circa?"

During your spring break, have each of you learn-ed law women and men felt crippling fear as you navigated your hometown roads now that your local red-light camera systems are down?

Really; think about it. Did you run a couple extra red-lights because you know the cameras are down?

Of course those are rhetorical questions; the answers are NOT ONLY PRESUMED but in fact KNOWN TO A CERTAINTY.

If you love the thought of a red-light camera on every corner; please re-visit your thoughts on Great-Britainizing our AMERICAN society with unneeded, unwanted, and ineffective cameras.

We don't want to ignore technological advancement, but not every new-fangled thing deserves implementation. For instance, many of you (perhaps most) find human cloning a little bothersome, but, hey, it's advanced technology.

When you come back from your 1976 spring break, PASS HOUSE BILL 1976 quicker than any legislation has ever made it through Missouri's general assembly. Surely you can do it at least as quickly as Obama got his health care platform through federally -- HB1976 is a lot less complicated and MUCH less controversial.

Candidate Profile -- Linda Wright -- Wentzville's Ward 3

Wentzville's municipal election is April 8th -- not too far away.  The New Wentzvillian wants you to be as informed as possible.  We will post candidate profiles for all of those candidates who provide a write up to the New Wentzvillian. We will not alter what the candidate provides. Here is candidate Linda Wright's profile for Wentzville's Ward 3.

website: http://www.LindaWright.net
phone: 636-332-0958

The Wright Choice for Wentzville.  Why?  Because I subscribe to Professionalism not politics.  It is time for a change in Ward Three and it is also time to stop playing political games and do what’s right for the residents and taxpayers.

I have the experience and commitment to serve as alderman.  My goal is to listen to the residents of Wentzville and our professional staff.  I will take the time to understand every issue, ask the questions residents would, and make common sense decisions based on what’s in your best interests.

I want to serve YOU – the citizens of Wentzville andI’m going door-to-door to earn your vote.  I hope to meet every voter in Ward Three before the election.
The list provided below will give you an idea of areas I’m thinking about daily. Each is very important to this community and we need to focus on them now!

There is a senior citizen population in Wentzville that is growing rapidly. We need to be prepared to welcome them and sustain them with the right facilities and support

Infrastructure to support all growth in Wentzville

Maintain our beautiful parks and recreation for families

Maintenance and promotion of the Wentzville Historical area

Reasonable taxes

Laws that protect but don't take our rights

More new homes will be needed and we want them built to code and inspected so they keep home values up and blend with homes already there

New and enduring businesses that are thriving and providing the needed jobs and tax money to support the community

My campaign is a grassroots movement and I have taken no funds from any large organizations or businesses to date. I do not want any appearance of being influenced by what residents are calling special interests.

I am fiscally responsible and as one example of that, currently serve on the Board of Directors, Villages of Stonegate Villas Home Owners Association.  The HOA was restored to a healthy financial status with the first surplus ever and reduction of bills that were difficult to pay before the current board began our term.  We reduced the monthly fee for the first timein 2014 and eliminated the special assessments we sometimes saw to cover bills.  It was our pleasure toreduce the monthly fee and the residents deserved it.
I belong to Faith Church St Louis – Westplex and work as a technical trainer and course developer.

Robert Hussey -- Candidate Profile -- Knows Real Estate

Wentzville's municipal election is April 8th -- not too far away.  The New Wentzvillian wants you to be as informed as possible.  We will post candidate profiles for all of those candidates who provide a write up to the New Wentzvillian. We will not alter what the candidate provides. Here is candidate Robert Hussey's profile for Wentzville's Ward 1.
Robert Hussey

Name: Robert Hussey
Age: 36
Occupation: Realtor/Broker/Owner of Expert Realty Co.
Contact Phone: 636-265-2295
Alderman in Ward 1 for the City of Wentzville

My wife Heather, children Victoria (18), Nicholas (12), John (8), Isabella (1) and I would appreciate your vote to serve the people of Wentzville.

Reason for Seeking Election:

·         Before my career in real estate, I worked in city management and therefore have several years of full-time local government experience. In addition, I also have a Master’s Degree in Public Policy Administration with an emphasis in Local Governmental Management. I believe this background will be a powerful asset to bring further economic development to the city of Wentzville.
·
Out of the 17 municipalities in St. Charles County area, the City of Wentzville has the fourth highest property tax rate. As a former city manager, I was able to keep property tax rates for the city I worked for at one of the lowest in the county.

·         After reviewing my store receipts, I noticed that city residents are paying nearly 9 percent in sales tax. This is driving residents (and others) to spend their money (and tax dollars) elsewherefor large purchase items.

·         Wentzville is the city I've chosen to raise my family.  I want to make sure it's the safest and most thriving area it can be, for both my family and yours.

Top three priorities if elected:

I will use my previous experience and contacts with MoDot to make the Hwy Z/Church Street exit perform more efficiently, especially during rush hour.

I will work towards smart economic development that has a measureable impact for the taxpayer’s dollars that will bring quality jobs, help further support our first responders, grow our neighborhoods and that in turn will provide more resources for our schools.

This economic development will then allow for a comprehensive plan to be laid out helping lower our property and sales taxes. .

Forrest Gossett -- Candidate Profile -- Committed to Open Government

Wentzville's municipal election is April 8th -- not too far away.  The New Wentzvillian wants you to be as informed as possible.  We will post candidate profiles for all of those candidates who provide a write up to the New Wentzvillian. Re-election as Wentzville Ward 1 Alderman

Wentzville is a great place to live. We are blessed with a good economic recovery, a housing market that is gaining momentum, great service from city employees and a family and business friendly environment. With the strong support of a terrific wife, Laurie, I have served the residents of Ward 1 since April 2012 and helped produce positive results for our city. I am asking Ward 1 residents for a second term.

Reason for Seeking Re-Election:
As a city, we need to continue the policies that have made city hall more approachable and responsive over the last two years. I have delivered on promises: open government, tight ethics laws, reducing property taxes, worked against a property tax rate hike when home values dropped, focused on parks, and accountability of tax dollars. I am available to our residents.

What are your three priorities if elected?

1. Continue improving services to our residents and business owners – and future residents and business owners - which helps grow our economy. I remain committed to open government.

2. Push to further reduce the city's portion of property taxes, which we reduced for tax year 2012, and blocked efforts to increase property tax rates in 2013 to compensate for a reduction in the city's assessed property values.

3. We've made significant progress on Highway 61 safety.  We will continue working with MoDOT and St. Charles County to improve Highway Z and Highway N. We need to continue repairing city streets, which had been neglected for several years.

What brief comment would you like the community to know about you?
I am a husband, father and grandfather. I have solid business experience, which I have used to guide my decision-making for the residents of Ward 1. I have earned an MBA from Norwich University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from American University in Washington, D.C. My experience includes serving on (and chairing) a number of nonprofit boards, service on the boards of directors of four different Chambers of Commerce and serving various enlisted and officer assignments in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. I am active in children's ministry at Calvary West Church.

Gatschenberger Votes Yes For Red-Light Cameras

Yesterday, in an extremely close vote in the Missouri House, Representative Chuck Gatschenberger voted YES on House Bill 1557 which legalizes red-light cameras in Missouri.

The bill passed with only three votes to spare so Gatschenberger's vote carried more meaning than many of his more perfunctory votes.

Gatschenberger's home city of Wentzville

purposefully got rid of its red-light cameras in the past year because there was little to no support for them in the community. His vote in favor of red-light cameras yesterday would appear to be a strange move given that he is currently running for a senate seat serving the City of Wentzville.

Gatschenberger's senatorial opponents are Bob Onder and Vicki Scneider.

The New Wentzvillian has contacted Rep. Gatschenberger, but has yet to receive a response.
